Shutter Scout Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 1, 2026
Shutter Scout is built for photographers planning around light, weather, moon, Milky Way, aurora, tides, dark skies, and field conditions. This policy explains what information the app uses and how it is handled.
Information You Provide or Save
Shutter Scout may store your saved locations, photography preferences, alert preferences, app settings, downloaded on-device models, and generated/exported cards on your device. This information is used to personalize app screens, forecasts, briefings, and notifications.
Location
If you grant location permission, Shutter Scout uses your location to find nearby photo spots, calculate local light and sky conditions, show local aurora odds, and power features such as Scout Nearby and Emberlight maps. Location permission is optional and can be changed in iOS Settings.
Notifications and Push Alerts
Shutter Scout can schedule local daily briefing notifications on your device. If you enable aurora or Arclight push alerts, the app sends the information needed to deliver those alerts to our alert service, including your APNs device token, rounded alert location, and selected alert thresholds. This data is used only to deliver the alerts you configure.
Photos
If you use Save to Photos, Shutter Scout asks for permission to add exported field guides or conditions cards to your photo library. The app does not need to read your photo library to provide this feature.
Weather, Astronomy, Tide, Space Weather, and Map Data
Shutter Scout retrieves public and commercial data needed to power forecasts and field guidance. These services can include weather, tide, space weather, aurora, comet, and map tile providers. Requests may include coordinates or region details needed to return local conditions.
On-Device Intelligence
Some Shutter Scout narrative and assistant features can run using on-device intelligence or optional downloaded models. Downloaded models are stored on your device and can be removed from app settings.
No Sale of Personal Information
We do not sell personal information. We do not use Shutter Scout to track you across apps or websites for advertising.
Data Retention and Choices
You can remove saved locations, disable notifications, turn off alerts, delete downloaded models, or uninstall the app. If push alerts are disabled, the app asks the alert service to remove the registered device token.
